New look for boathouse row
Well, the new lights were debuted over the big holiday weekend. Lots of folks seem wowed, but I share The Long Cut's take on the whole thing -- not as nice-looking, and prone to carnivalification. Compare the photos he shows there to images of the original, along the lines of this one or this.

I have to disagree on this one. I just passed by the new lights tonight -- and I liked them. I'm not sure if you're only judging from the photos, but I'd suggest that you go see them in person before you pass judgement.
Fair enough. I drive seldom enough these days that it may be quite a while, but I promise to report back.
My bias currently arises from (a) some (irrational) residual bitterness at the lights' having been off for so long, and (b) some (nontrivial) horror at the disco vision in the second photo -- that's *exactly* what I never want to see there. There are already enough buildings in the city changing their colors for every season, and historic sites getting video projected on them, that I find such a show off-putting. But I look forward to being disuaded.
Well, when I saw them they were only one color -- white. So perhaps I jumped the gun myself and need to wait to see the different arrangements before I decide.
probably beating a dead horse by now, but I got my first look last night. (a) clear, reasonably nice-looking, if not as warm as the previous. (b) strangely missing bits of the outlines, as though the guys hanging the lights didn't understand the desired effect. I'll have to have another look when I'm not behind the wheel, but something seems off. (c) let's stick to white. that's what they are now, except for a short distracting piece across the roof of one boathouse, which must be a glitch.
